A large-scale operation took place at the Jena public transport depot on Saturday, June 15, in which around 100 firefighters and ambulance crews from Jena were involved. Around 20 medical students from Friedrich Schiller University Jena supported the operation as extras for the injured.

The aim of the exercise was to coordinate the execution of human rescue, technical assistance and rescue service care in the event of accidents involving road trains and to train cooperation at all interfaces.

The training scenario simulated an accident between a GT6M streetcar, a car and a bicycle. There were 15 injured people in the streetcar, 3 people in the car and one person on the bicycle. The cyclist was trapped under the tram, died and had to be rescued. Of the remaining people, around 9 were seriously injured, while all the others were slightly injured.

The two-hour exercise also served to familiarize the trainees of the rescue service personnel, the emergency paramedics and students with such a scenario, to practice procedures and to prepare them for an emergency. Even before the training organized by the fire and rescue service, Marco Lange (Team Leader Quality Assurance at Jenaer Nahverkehr and volunteer in the Winzerla fire department) presented the new light tracks of the transport company to the comrades. The focus was on the special features of the 42-metre-long trams and what to bear in mind in the event of accidents involving this type of tram (TRAMLINK).

This exercise was an important step towards even better coordination and efficiency in the management of accidents involving streetcars in Jena. The last time a similarly large-scale scenario was rehearsed at the depot was ten years ago.
