From the past to the present and the future of gas supply: On Thursday, 8 February 2024, around 35 guests took the opportunity to listen to a book reading followed by a lecture and discussion at the Stadtwerke Jena Customer Center in Saalstraße 8a.
Frank Michael Wagner, author of the book „Wie das Erdgas aus Sibirien nach Westeuropa kam“ (How natural gas came from Siberia to Western Europe), gave a true-to-life account of his personal experiences during the construction of two natural gas pipelines from the 1970s to the 1990s. Both routes, commonly known as the „Druzhba route“ and „ZJO natural gas route“, were used to deliver the fossil fuel natural gas from the Far East to Western Europe over a distance of thousands of kilometers. In particular, his book sheds light on the everyday lives of the construction workers involved in the mammoth project.
Christian Dornack, Head of Strategy at Stadtwerke Jena Netze, then took the bridge to today. In a presentation, he delved deeper into the topic of current and future gas supply in Jena. In particular, he discussed the plans of the municipal utilities for the further use of the existing natural gas networks as hydrogen networks and described specific challenges and solutions for a green heat supply for Jena. Afterwards, both experts were available for questions and discussions.
