Jena pools successfully certified in energy management

The Jena offices have been successfully certified in energy management in accordance with DIN EN ISO 50001. The initial certification took place at the end of 2023 and is initially valid for three years.

With a total area of 7,170 square meters, the GalaxSea leisure pool is the size of just over 27 tennis courts. The water area of 1,058 square meters comprises around 4 tennis courts. This leaves 23 tennis courts for the sauna, catering, wellness, changing, technical and administration areas. The guests' expectations (2023: 251,000): They want to feel good, both in the water and on land. The aspiration of the Jena swimming and leisure company: "We want to create fantastic experiences and relaxed leisure enjoyment for our guests - as energy-efficiently as possible," emphasizes Managing Director Susan Zetzmann.

But where exactly is the optimization potential at GalaxSea? Which adjustments can further increase energy efficiency and reduce operating costs and carbon dioxide emissions? In order to get to the bottom of these questions, a first energy audit was initiated at GalaxSea in 2015 under the direction of Energy Manager Evelyn Mecklenburg from Stadtwerke Energie, followed by a second audit four years later. Now the whole thing has been taken to the next level and an energy management system has been established - not only for the GalaxSea, but also for Jena's two outdoor swimming pools and the new sports swimming pool "Schwimmparadies Jena".

Evelyn Mecklenburg comments: „An energy management system means dealing structurally with the use of energy. The aim is to continuously increase energy efficiency, reduce energy consumption and maintain the improvements achieved.“ This involves not only energy-related processes, but also aspects of corporate management such as purchasing, training, communication and document management. The exact requirements for introduction, implementation, maintenance and improvement are regulated by a fixed standard (DIN EN ISO 50001) and certification is carried out by an accredited company.
