The first competition in this Olympic discipline on Sunday, April 7, 2024 demonstrated that the new sports swimming pool in Lobeda-West, the "Schwimmparadies Jena", is also a sports venue for water polo. The tournament was a complete success and we are delighted with the positive response. We would like to thank everyone involved for making this event possible. We are already looking forward to more exciting water polo competitions,
said Susan Zetzmann, Managing Director of Jenaer Bäder- und Freizeitgesellschaft.
A total of six teams from Leipzig, Gotha, Zwickau, Sömmerda, Eisenach and Jena competed against each other. The tournament was won by the Zwickau team. The team from Jena, which was only founded six months ago with coach Timo Schütt, came in second to last place.
A successful start
The competition was organized by the USV Jena under the direction of Ralf Günther. His competition summary was: "It is great that we are now also establishing water polo in Jena. The new indoor swimming pool has all the facilities for this; it is standardized for water polo competitions. Yesterday's competition was a successful start.“
A special feature of the sports swimming hall is the variable size of the two-meter-deep main pool. A movable bridge allows the eight 50-meter lanes to be divided into sixteen 25-meter lanes. However, variable lengths are also possible, as required for water polo in particular.
